Women for Women - Women of Sudan

I recieved this email today from Women For Women International. I wanted to share it, and encourage everyone to stand with the Women in Sudan as they work towards creating a more peaceful future. You can click on the picture above if you would like to send them a message of support.

"This Saturday, July 9, 2011, the Republic of South Sudan declares its independence and a new nation is born.

We at Women for Women International welcome the creation of this new republic as a victory for the women of South Sudan. Why? Because for the first time in Sudan’s history, women were able to add their votes and voices to the national debate over the future of their country.

For more than 40 years, women have endured the atrocities of civil war, famine and tribal disputes, all as Sudan’s least valued citizens. After suffering sexual and gender-based violence and having their families torn apart for so long, the women of Sudan are desperate for peace.

For them, independence represents a symbol of hope for a peaceful future and an opportunity for all Southerners-including women-to define their own destiny.

That’s why Women for Women International teaches the women in our programs to know their rights and encourages them to participate in the democratic process. We taught them about the referendum and why it was important for their voices to be heard. Women proudly walked to the polls on voting day, waiting in long lines for their turn to create change not only for themselves, but for their family, community and ultimately their country.

Sudan still faces many challenges. The violence over territories, oil rights and food continue to rage on. Independence may not bring peace right away.

That is why Women for Women International is committed to staying in South Sudan to educate and support women and give them the tools to provide for their family. We have been in South Sudan since 2006, and we will not leave until our job is done.

After decades of war and displacement, the women of South Sudan want peace. Women for Women International is proud to share in their journey towards that goal.

Please stand with us and with the women of Sudan by sending your Message of Support today. Thank you for all you do."
